DEBLOAT & OPTIMIZATION GUIDE

Performance & Debloat Philosophy

Understanding Windows services, components, background telemetry, and the balance between raw speed and day-to-day stability in tetoOS.

Does disabling more services always make Windows faster?

Not necessarily. Idle services do not continuously consume significant CPU or RAM resources. What matters most is balance - removing what is genuinely unnecessary without breaking daily software compatibility.

Why aren't all 'unused' services disabled?

Because "unused by one person" does not mean "unused by everyone". Features like the Print Spooler, for example, are still essential for PDF creators or design apps that rely on virtual printers - even if you don't own a physical printer.

What is tetoOS's design philosophy regarding Windows services?

Our philosophy balances performance with system compatibility. Idle services consume minimal resources, so disabling everything indiscriminately provides negligible gains while risking system instability. tetoOS only disables services meeting strict criteria:

  • • Rarely used by typical personal computing workflows.
  • • Enterprise and corporate-only network infrastructure.
  • • Obsolete legacy components.
  • • Specific hardware features unnecessary on consumer gaming rigs.
  • • Non-essential background tasks providing no measurable end-user value.

Why are features like Storage Sense, Reserved Storage, and Prefetcher disabled by default?

These legacy mechanisms offer minimal benefit on modern solid-state drives (SSD / NVMe):

  • • Prefetcher: Engineered for slow mechanical HDDs; unnecessary on high-speed SSDs.
  • • Storage Sense: May unexpectedly delete temp files and workspace caches you still need.
  • • Reserved Storage: Locks away gigabytes of disk space exclusively for Windows Update.

How does Windows Update work in tetoOS?

By default, Windows Update is paused until 2077 to prevent unexpected restarts or forced unwanted updates. However, you maintain full control to toggle it on or off at any time using the built-in update control tool.

What about Windows Defender / Antivirus?

Microsoft Defender is NOT forcefully ripped out of the OS image. We provide dedicated toggle scripts allowing users to easily enable or disable Real-Time Protection according to their needs.

Is using this custom Windows modification legal?

Custom builds reside in a legal grey area. The core operating system remains genuine Microsoft Windows binaries, which means Microsoft's licensing terms still apply. tetoOS strictly modifies and optimizes the environment. Full responsibility for usage resides with the end-user.
